Position: Youth Theater Director

Rate: $22.75/hour

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Under the supervision of the Arts & Events Specialist, this position is responsible for musical direction and/or directing full length productions for the Foothills Youth Theatre including the overall vision, holding auditions, running rehearsals and performances. The Youth Theater Director must be dependable and enjoy working with children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Responsible for all aspects of directing full-length productions including the overall vision; holding auditions and selecting the cast/assigning parts; running rehearsals and coordinating all staff and volunteers to put on the final product. Must be hands on at each rehearsal and work with every level; adapting direction techniques to meet the needs of participants.

· Musical Director: Responsible for the musical aspects of the youth musicals including but not limited to, musical instruction, casting, and rehearsals.

· Responsible for communicating effectively between the team - including artistic staff, outside contractors, volunteers etc. Utilize any support staff including event staff or stage managers to initiate and organize these communications.

· Assigns nonperforming students and volunteers to backstage production tasks, including but not limited to constructing, painting, moving scenery, operating stage light, and sound equipment. May direct activities of students involved in constructing, painting, and lighting scenery.

· Responsible for working within the production budget, clearly communicating set, prop and costume needs in advance to the Arts & Events Specialist.

· Ensure that appropriate equipment/supplies are available for rehearsals and the production; set up and take down. Completes preventative maintenance by inspecting equipment on a regular basis. (Note: No supplies may be purchased unless directed by the Arts & Events Specialist)

· Be prepared, creative and energized when directing.

· Responsible for all communication between actors, manage conflict among volunteers and/or staff; enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations.

· Provide a safe learning environment. Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report.

· Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

· Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.

· Attend and participate in production meetings, staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.

· Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs for co-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutes for shifts unable to work.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Drama, Theater, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, and\or Minimum of two (2) years experience directing or assistant directing full length productions.
  • Experience supervising youth preferred.
  • Professional experience in other theatrical areas of production (lighting, sound, set, etc) preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED :

Must have knowledge of stage performance, stage-directing experience, and the ability to successfully work with youth and/or adults.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT :

95% of the work is performed indoors, working in a studio environment with frequent interruptions and distractions. Working in rooms of various temperatures, indoor noisy environment and background noise.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Must be able to demonstrate and perform the techniques unique to varying art disciplines. Must be able to push, pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 25 pounds unassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 50 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, depth perception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone, e-mail, and through face-to-face communication is needed.
